Homeschool Curriculum Reviews: Get Ready for the Code
by Sharon

If your little guy enjoys workbooks and wants to do school with his older siblings. The explode the Code books are a great gentle introduction.
Get Ready for the Code Book A is the first in a series of 3 books that introduce all the letters of the alphabet.
I love the way the books have a pattern to the pages. Each letter is introduced then 4 or 5 pages follow with a different writing activity for that letter.
The pages are all black and white. I appreciate the simplicity!
There is a teachers guide that offers ideas for further activities to supplement what he is learning in the book. Helpful, but not required. If you can come up with other ways to practice the letters the workbooks alone are enough.
Do things like find all the letter A on the cereal box. Or p oint out signs with familiar letters. Draw letters in the dirt. Draw letters everywhere!
If you've used Get Ready for the Code, Book A with your kids I'd love to hear what you think. Was it helpful? Click on the comment link at the bottom of the page and let me know.

Get Set for the Code

Explode the Code Series
Educators Publishing Service
Get Set for the Code is the second in this series. Get Set teaches consonants p, s, n, j, h, and d.
Simple black and white drawings adds to the appeal of these books for me. Not a lot to distract.
Similar activities with each letter provides a routine for your little guy to understand. Activities include tasks such as visual tracking, matching, tracing, copying, and identifying the letters and their sounds.
Practice noticing differences provides great practice for future recognition of b and d and similar letters.

More in Explode the Code Series
Educators Publishing Service
Get Ready for The Code, Get Set for The Code, and Go for The Code, which all introduce the consonant letters, comprise a three-book series of primers for the Explode The Code series.
Go for the Code is the final book in that series. Introducing the letters teaches consonants c, l, g, w, y, v, z, and q this primer prepares your child to go on to the Explode the Code Phonics books.
I've used these books with all 4 of my sons. I love the simplicity and easy introduction that these books offer. Add supplemental games and simple interaction with you and the written word around you.
The following materials are also offered. Great for coming up with extra activities. Hands on might be just the ticket for your little guy.
